I got hip to this song and Living Colour’s music in general from watching wrestling and hearing CM Punk’s entrance music. I really like how evergreen “Cult of Personality” is. All of us, without regard to ideology, are susceptible to idolatry if we are not careful. At best, leaders listen and facilitate what the people want and help us to dream of a better tomorrow. Far too often, power corrupts. We keep putting people in a stratosphere of reverence that was only meant for the Most High.
A few weeks ago my family and I enjoyed watching Over The Moon. It’s a fun movie and a great overview of Pharrell’s impact as a producer and ambassador of hip-hop culture. I was overjoyed to see N.O.R.E play an important part in the movie because, in truth, this song was my introduction to Pharrell and The Neptunes. The movie taught me that Pharrell had been working on music since the early 90s when he was working with Teddy Riley! It’s a reminder to all artists to keep working because it’s working.
When that white smoke let the world know a new Pope was selected, I thought of this song immediately. I told a friend earlier today that Pope Leo XIV has been such a fascinating world figure already. From his tweets, to his Chicago roots, Haitian ancestry, and connection to my beloved Knicks via Villanova, there’s been so many ways for people of all sorts of social locations to feel a connection to the Pope. My prayer is that he helps lead the world into a more compassionate future. Part of what I enjoy about following Jesus is the way Jesus’s teachings compel me to respect the full dignity of everyone I encounter. When we see each other through the lens of Imago Dei and understand that we are all “fearfully and wonderfully made,” we live further into the kingdom of God.
My Knicks lost Game 3 today but we are still sitting pretty against the Celtics. It is so fun when the Knicks are good and I love talking to fellow Knicks fans about how sweet it is when the team gives us hope. Two wins away fellas!
